The German Association for IT, Telecommunications and New media (BITKOM) has reported that the number of internet protocol television (IPTV) subscribers in the country reached 536,000 at end-2008, up from 180,000 a year earlier. Achim Berg, vice president of BITKOM, said: ‘More and more people are discovering IPTV, the television of the future. The demands on television consumption are changing in the internet age, IPTV gives viewers freedom.’
Deutsche Telekom accounts for over 90% of the country’s IPTV subscribers, having recently announced an excess of half a million customers, while Telecom Italia subsidiary HanseNet has reported an estimated 25,000 subscribers. The large increase is thought to be a result of the introduction of higher resolution, flat panel displays with internet connectivity, and the ability for customers to use email, instant messaging and video-on-demand via an IPTV service.
