News Corp eyes Telecom Italia stake

3 Feb 2009

Rupert Murdoch’s global media group News Corp is reportedly in talks which could see it take a stake in Italy’s dominant telco, Telecom Italia (TI). A report from Dow Jones Newswires, which cites local newspaper La Repubblica, claims that Murdoch has held discussions with Cesar Alierta, chairman of Spanish operator Telefonica which has an interest in TI through the holding company Telco. News Corp is already present in Italy with the satellite TV operator Sky Italia and is looking to expand into the country’s telecoms sector. The deal would, however, face opposition from Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, whose Mediaset group is one of Sky Italia’s main competitors in the Italian TV market.
