Three ISPs 'out of action'

2 Feb 2009

According to Information Warfare Monitor, three out of four main internet service providers (ISPs) in Kyrgyzstan have been taken offline by a series of distributed denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Due to the scale of the attacks, which are reportedly similar to those carried out by Russian hackers on Estonia and Georgia, upstream providers in Russia and Kazakhstan have refused to pass traffic in and out of the country. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database there were an estimated 52,000 broadband subscribers (using services with speeds of 256kbps of faster) in the country at the end of 2007.
