Chunghwa expects lower handset sales

Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom says it expects to purchase 2.1 million mobile handsets in 2009, down from 2.3 million last year due to weaker consumer demand. Local newspaper The Commercial Times reports that handset sales across all providers are expected to stand at around six million units this year, down from 6.5 million in 2008. Taiwan was home to 23.7 million cellular subscribers at the end of September 2008 according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, with another 1.5 million using the limited mobility PHS network of First International Telecom (Fitel).
