Pelephone close to commercial HSPA launch

12 Jan 2009

Globes Online is reporting that Israeli cellco Pelephone, a subsidiary of telco Bezeq, is planning to launch its new HSPA network in the next few days. It is believed that the cellco has not officially announced the launch date in a bid to surprise rival mobile operators. According to the report Pelephone began distributing handsets specifically designed to take advantage of the new infrastructure to its corporate customers. Residential customers are expected to be offered the handsets in the near future. It is also believed that the launch of the network, which is expected around the middle of January, will not be officially unveiled by the operator. Pelephone is believed to have spent approximately ILS1 billion (USD258 million) on the new network, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database.
