Albanian telecoms regulator the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP) is planning to award a fourth wireless network operator licence. According to the head of AKEP, Ilir Shehu, offers for the concession will be accepted from 23 January. According to him, ‘many foreign companies had already been interested to enter in the market.’
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Albania is currently home to a triumvirate of wireless network players: Albania Mobile Communications (AMC), Vodafone Albania and Eagle Mobile. The latter launched services in March last year and by the end of September had attracted around 100,000 customers, leaving it a considerable distance behind AMC, with 1.3 million users, and Vodafone with 1.2 million.
