Hong Kong qualifies WiMAX bidders

5 Jan 2009

Hong Kong’s Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) has shortlisted five qualified bidders for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) licences, which cover the operation of WiMAX networks. The list of five companies, unchanged from an earlier announcement, are China Mobile Hong Kong (which operates mobile services in Hong Kong under the Peoples brand); CSL (a representative company of domestic cellco CSL New World Mobility); Genius Brand (a joint venture of former monopoly telco PCCW and local cellco Hutchison Telephone Company (3)); Hong Kong Broadband Network (the broadband arm of local telco City Telecom); and SmarTone Wireless, a subsidiary of another Hong Kong-based cellco SmarTone Telecommunications (which offers services as SmarTone-Vodafone). A total of 195MHz of wireless broadband (including WiMAX) spectrum (90MHz in the 2.3GHz band and 105MHz in the 2.5GHz-2.6GHz bands) will be auctioned on 12 January. Winners will be allowed to provide fixed, mobile voice or data services or a combination of these services.
