Consumer association calls for clarity over Telefonica/TI

5 Jan 2009

The consumer association Union de Consumidores de la Argentina has called on the country’s antitrust agency CNDC to clarify its position over Telefonica’s purchase of a stake in Telecom Italia (TI), reports BNamericas citing local newspaper La Nacion. TI operates in Argentina via Telecom Argentina, which competes head to head with Telefonica subsidiary Telefonica de Argentina. The government is studying the impact of the Spanish giant’s stake acquisition in TI, and in October 2007 it created a two-person oversight board at Telecom Argentina to monitor whether Telefonica was influencing boardroom decision making. The board has presented the report with its conclusions, but the antitrust agency has yet to issue its final ruling.
