Hong Kong telecoms regulator OFTA has announced a list of five companies that have submitted applications to bid for spectrum in its upcoming wireless broadband licence auction. The bidders are: China Mobile Hong Kong (which operates mobile services in Hong Kong under the Peoples brand); CSL (a representative company of domestic cellco CSL New World Mobility); Genius Brand (a company indirectly owned by local cellco Hutchison Telephone Company (3) and Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT), presumed to be a venture of former monopoly telco PCCW, which earlier this year formed HKT Group as a holding company for its core businesses); Hong Kong Broadband Network (the broadband arm of local telco City Telecom); and SmarTone Wireless, a subsidiary of another Hong Kong-based cellco SmarTone Telecommunications (which offers services as SmarTone-Vodafone). A total of 195MHz of wireless broadband (including WiMAX) spectrum (90MHz in the 2.3GHz band and 105MHz in the 2.5GHz-2.6GHz bands) will be auctioned in January 2009. Licensees will be allowed to provide fixed, mobile voice or data services or a combination of these services. OFTA says it will announce a list of qualified bidders shortly.
