Brazilian long-distance telco Intelig Telecom has launched a broadband service using pre-WiMAX technology in the 5.8GHz band, BNamericas reports. The service offers three different connection speeds – 1Mbps, 2Mbps and 3Mbps – and is only initially available in Rio de Janeiro, where it will be marketed under the banner IP Max. Intelig plans to roll out the service to the federal capital Brasilia and in Belo Horizonte by the end of the year, with plans to make the service available to other state capitals during 2009. A Brazilian firm, MTEL, is the technical integrator responsible for project implementation. The 5.8GHz band is not licensed by telecoms watchdog Anatel.
