Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has awarded Mitsubishi Electric an SGD200 million (USD203 million) contract to build its ST-2 communications satellite. The new orbiter will increase the Singaporean firm’s reach in emerging markets, including in the Middle East. The satellite will also allow SingTel to fulfil the growing demand for mobile satellite services in the region, such as its ‘Office-At-Sea’ maritime applications products. The ST-2 satellite, which is due to be delivered in 2010, will effectively replace the ST-1 platform; more than 50% of its capacity has already been signed up by regional customers prior to its launch. SingTel will co-own ST-2 with Chunghwa Telecom owning approximately 62% of the joint venture while Chunghwa will own the rest.
