EU puts cap on mobile data, SMS roaming charges

2 Dec 2008

EU telecoms ministers have reached agreement on reducing mobile roaming charges for data/internet and SMS texting services. Ministers endorsed the European Commission’s proposal to reduce charges for sending text messages and downloading data via mobile phones for consumers when they are in a foreign country in the EU. Under the decision, SMS is capped at EUR0.11 per sent message – down from a EUR0.29 EU roaming average – and data download charges are capped at EUR1 per 1MB data – estimated at around a tenth of the current EU roaming average. The limits are set to come into force on 27 July 2009.
