PTA raises PKR26 million through WiLL auctions for AJK and NA

1 Dec 2008

Pakistani news source The Daily Times is reporting that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has completed auctions for wireless in the local loop (WiLL) licences in the regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Northern Areas (NA). Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) successfully bagged three licences. It paid PKR10 million (USD128,045) for one block in the 3.5GHz range in Mirpur in AJK (TR-1) – a second block in the region was withdrawn as no second bidder emerged – and PKR4 million for one block in the Muzzaffarabad region in AJK (TR-2). Wateen successfully bid PKR4 million for a single block in the NA region (TR-3), and PTCL matched this price, enabling both operators to gain concessions. Wateen also matched PTCL’s bid for a licence in TR-2, and in total the auctions raised PKR26 million. The auction of WiLL licences comes as part of government efforts to provide enhanced and affordable telecom services to the people in the three regions. Commenting on the auction PTA chairman Syde Nasrul Karim said ‘Completion of the spectrum of bidding is the culmination point in the deregulation of telecom sector of AJK and NA.’
