Peoples offers free incoming calls

1 Dec 2008

China Mobile Peoples Telephone Company (Peoples), the wholly-owned Hong Kong-based subsidiary of China Mobile, has announced that it will offer free incoming calls to users of its mobile network in Hong Kong and Guangdong, the South China Morning Post reported on Friday. GSM/GPRS/EDGE network operator Peoples is Hong Kong’s only non-3G-based cellco, and competes more on price rather than cutting-edge technology. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, in April 2007 Hong Kong’s telecoms regulator OFTA ruled that the existing system of Mobile Party’s Network Pays interconnection, in place since the early 1980s, would be scrapped on 27 April 2009, after which date network access tariffs will be solely a matter of commercial negotiation between operators.
