China Unicom plans New Year’s Eve 3G launch

China Unicom expects to launch a trial W-CDMA network in seven cities by the end of this year, according to Chang Xiaobing, chairman and CEO of the telco. Reports in the local press suggest that the seven cities will be Shanghai, Shenzhen, Foshan, Liuzhou, Zhengzhou, Baoding and Wuxi, with around 100 W-CDMA base stations in each place. The company is reported to be looking to complete a roll out in all major cities by mid-2009, with medium-sized cities covered by the end of the year. China Unicom expects to invest USD14.6 billion in 3G infrastructure in 2009-10.
