The Taiwanese WiMAX licensee Tatung InfoComm says it will become the first of the country’s operators to launch commercial mobile WiMAX services when it switches on its WiMAX networks in Penghu County in the first quarter of next year. Tatung is planning to expand coverage to Kaohsiung City in mid-2009 and will add Kaohsiung County, Pingdong County and Hualien County in the second half of the year, CENS reports. Tatung has a licence covering the south of Taiwan, but it is in talks with northern region licensees First International, VMAX and Global Mobile over a possible partnership to offer island-wide roaming.
