BNamericas is reporting that Mexican telco Marcatel plans to take part in the country’s planned spectrum auction as it looks to extend its services to broadband and 3G; Mexican regulator Cofetel is planning to auction 3G spectrum in the 1.9GHz and 1.7GHz-2.1GHz bands, alongside WiMAX spectrum in the 3.4GHz-3.7GHz bands next year. Marcatel’s president Gustava de la Garza noted, ‘We are ready to participate. We are waiting to see the bidding conditions and how many carriers will be allowed to participate, and then we will determine our offer’, also calling on Cofetel to consider implementing restrictions on additional spectrum that would be available to incumbent Telmex. Marcatel currently offers service including domestic and international long distance telephony, private enterprise lines and dedicated internet access and has revealed that it expects sales to reach USD160 million by 2009.
