ETC reiterates subscriber growth targets; ZTE to fund bulk of expansion

State-owned telco Ethiopia Telecommunications Corp (ETC) is aiming to increase its mobile subscriber base to 15 million from its current 2.2 million within the next two years, Reuters reports. The operator plans to meet its targets by using a ETB13.8 billion (USD1.5 billion) loan to fund network expansion, and ETC has confirmed it plans to roll out a CDMA-based network with capacity for 2.4 million users. ZTE is also understood to have committed to building a USD5.2 million plant in the north of Ethiopia to make mobile handsets. Additionally, the telco has revealed that it is also looking to increase the number of fixed lines in operation by 2010 to 4.4 million, up from the 1.1 million at 7 July 2008.
