Vodafone’s subsidiary in Italy says it is testing an upgrade to its HSDPA 3.5G mobile data service which will offer download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. Vodafone Italia is conducting trials in its lab in Milan, Telecompaper reports, using equipment from Nokia Siemens Networks. Vodafone has deployed a slower version of HSDPA over its entire 3G UMTS network, which covers 80% of Italy’s population. The cellco claims that around 8% of Italians still have no access to fixed broadband solutions and that wireless networks will help fill in the gaps in coverage. It is facing competition from WiMAX wireless broadband operators, however, which are currently deploying the country’s first mobile WiMAX networks.
