BNamericas, citing local press, is reporting that Mexican cellco Telefonica Moviles Mexico (Movistar) has launched its 3.5G network in eight cities; the service is expected to be available commercially from 20 November. One city not covered by the new network is Mexico City, where the mobile operator is still awaiting the allocation of additional spectrum; the allocation is not expected until 2009. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Movistar is the second largest cellco in Mexico, claiming 19.2% of the market at June 2008, well behind rival Telcel, which held 71.9% at the same time.
