DoT rules out any new mobile concessions

18 Nov 2008

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced that it will not grant any further mobile licences, Indian news source Telecom Tiger is reporting. The decision comes after the regulator had stipulated that applications for new licences must be submitted in by 25 September 2007, despite having initially announced a deadline of 1 October 2007. The DoT maintains that there is sufficient competition in the market, hence its decision, although legal challenges to the ruling are expected. The report notes that out of 575 applications for new licences, 343 were made between 26 September 2007 and 1 October 2007, and those likely to miss out as a result of the regulators decision include Tulip, AT&T and Sterlite.
