Covage, a 50:50 joint venture between Axia Networks and VINCI Networks that was set up to explore network opportunities in France, has selected Infinera to supply a DTN optical system for its nationwide network rollout across the country. Covage says the tie-up with Infinera is designed to support its wholesale telecom business by utilising the speed and flexibility of Infinera’s digital architecture and help it to fulfil its goal of bringing greater competition to the French telecom market. Covage is interested in acquiring, developing and operating so-called ‘Open Access Next Generation Networks’ in France and, as such, it provides wholesale bandwidth services to other telecom operators, enabling communities to receive lower communications services costs, while simultaneously increasing broadband coverage. Axia Networks France is a wholly owned subsidiary of Axia NetMedia Corporation, and VINCI Networks is a 100% subsidiary of VINCI Construction France. Covage has interests in a dozen regional networks in France and is currently constructing a national fibre-optic backbone to interconnect its regional systems.
