Romanian operators’ quarterly results

UPC Romania reported revenues fell 11% in the third quarter of 2008, from USD60.6 million to USD53.9 million year-on-year. Net income fell from USD77.8 million to USD169.3 million in the three months to 30 September 2008 against the same period last year. The total number of customers fell by 6% in twelve months to 1.29 million subscribers, as the number of analogue cable users decreased from 1.26 million to 1.08 million against an increase in digital cable TV subscribers to 73,300, and an increase of 59% year-on-year in DTH customers. The company had 225,300 internet customers at the end of September 2008, while the cable broadband coverage area widened by 13%, to 1.52 million dwellings. In the telephony market the number of subscribers increased to 120,600, while the coverage area widened by 13% to 1.46 million homes.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Romania reported revenue of EUR615 million for the quarter to 30 September 2008, and Orange Romania reported revenue of EUR670 million for the same period, up 7.7% and 7.9% respectively year-on-year. Orange reported 10.2 million users at the end of September and forecasts 10.6 million by year-end. Orange has 1.146 million 3G broadband clients, 15% more than Vodafone with 996,000 customers on 3G and HSDPA services at the same date.
