Brazilian cellcos petition for more time to pay for UMTS licences

14 Nov 2008

A number of Brazilian 3G licensees have reportedly approached the regulator, Anatel, requesting more time to pay for their concessions, Telecompaper reports. Citing the global financial crisis, CTBC, Oi, TIM Brasil and Vivo have requested a further 18 months to make their payments. In total, BRL4.77 billion (USD2.05 billion) is due to be paid by 10 December and to date, only Claro has paid its fees (BRL1.4 billion) on time. However, the operators have been told that Anatel cannot change the rules of the auction and the only option would be via a presidential decree.
