New Artel outlines bandwidth plans

11 Nov 2008

New Artel, Rwanda’s sole licensed satellite operator, says that it provides 94Mbps of bandwidth across more than 130 sites in rural areas. According to AllAfrica.com, the company, which receives money from the government’s RFW1.5 billion (USD2.7 million) universal access fund to provide telecoms services in areas that MTN Rwanda and Rwandatel do not cover, hopes to connect 120Mbps by December 2008 and 150Mbps by the end of January 2009. ‘The target was to have 150Mbps by end October 2008 because we have sufficient resources to provide connectivity, but currently we are meeting the demand from our customers and we don’t want to have capacity seated idle,’ said Francis Karemera, CEO of New Artel.
