Globalstar licence expanded to allow rural WiMAX

5 Nov 2008

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved proposals by California-based satellite internet operator Globalstar for the modification of its licence to permit the use of the WiMAX air interface protocol. The decision opens the way for Globalstar to deploy WiMAX wireless broadband services to more than 500 rural communities across the United States. Globalstar has received a USD267 million loan from the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Utilities Program which will enable it to build out WiMAX and satellite internet networks to rural areas which are currently underserved or unserved by fixed broadband networks.
