Telefonica O2 CR contracts Huawei for 3G expansion

29 Oct 2008

Czech mobile operator Telefonica O2 CR has contracted Huawei of China to expand its 3G/3.5G network coverage with UMTS/HSDPA equipment, Telecompaper reports. The deal signed by the two firms is also understood to include upgrade work on the operator’s 2G infrastructure. O2 is currently the sole operator providing HSDPA services in the capital Prague and in Brno. From the start of next year it aims to offer download connections of up to 3.6Mbps and by the end of the year hopes to extend service coverage to an additional 30 localities across the Republic. Over the next two to three years it hopes to roll out HSDPA to 70% of the population. Huawei will also modernise the cellco’s existing 2.5G EDGE network, increasing connections speeds on the entire GSM network to 150-2000kbps.
