French behemoth France Telecom (FT) is reportedly interested in expanding its footprint in Southern Africa following its recent move to enter into a joint venture with HITS Telecom in Uganda. ITWeb says FT, which markets services globally under the Orange brand, is keen to explore investment opportunities in the region in order to meets its future growth targets, but only if the right opportunities come at the right price. FT spokesman Tom Wright is quoted as saying: ‘We are already present in 15 African countries, including Botswana, Madagascar and Mauritius. And we could possibly consider other opportunities in Southern Africa if they meet our criteria in terms of market growth potential and are available at a reasonable acquisition price.’ The French telco recently cemented its position in East Africa through the acquisition of a majority share of Telkom Kenya in December 2007, and its 53% investment in Orange Uganda.
