Indian 3G goes back to the future

22 Oct 2008

The long-awaited auctions for 3G spectrum in India have once again been delayed, Telecom Tiger is reporting. Having previously announced plans to auction the spectrum by the end of this year, Communications Minister Andimuthu Raja has confirmed that this has now been pushed back to the beginning of 2009, stating, ‘The 3G auction would be completed by 15 January and the operators would have to pay up by 31 January.’ Mr Raja has stressed that this will not delay the anticipated timeline for the other processes involved however, and it is understood that the primary reason for the date of the auction itself being moved back stems from concerns that the festive period could discourage some operators from participating in the auction.
