iBurst network to close; BigAir bid rejected

22 Oct 2008

ZDnet is reporting that the iBurst wireless network will be closed down, despite interest from other operators in bidding for the infrastructure. iBurst’s parent company, Commander Communications, went into receivership in August 2008, and wireless internet provider BigAir was reported to have put in a bid to buy the network earlier this month. BigAir has confirmed that this bid has been rejected by the receivers managing Commander’s assets, with a statement from the operator noting, ‘The company has also been advised by the receivers that they intend to discontinue providing iBurst services and the network will be shut down and closed no later than 19 December 2008.’ It is unclear at present what impact the closure of the network will have, as iBurst operated primarily as a wholesale model, and it has not been revealed how many customers were using the network.
