VNPT increases cross-country bandwidth

21 Oct 2008

VietNamNet Bridge reports that Vietnam Data Communications (VDC), the internet arm of incumbent Vietnam Post and Telecoms (VNPT), claims to have added 2.5Gbps capacity to its fibre link from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, increasing the total capacity of the connection to 7.5Gbps. Last month VDC lit a 2.5Gbps line from HCM City to the US, upgrading Vietnam’s international bandwidth from 11.5Gbps to 14Gbps. It has plans to further increase international capacity to 36.4Gbps by the end of 2008. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, VDC had an estimated 900,000 broadband subscribers midway through 2008, placing it second in the market behind rival Viettel, which had an estimated 1.4 million.
