16 Oct 2008

Safaricom has reduced call charges by up to 70% in a bid to retain its current customer base and attract new subscribers in the face of increased competition in the Kenyan market. The offer, named Jibambie, reduces tariffs for pre-paid calls within its network to as low as KES3 (USD0.04) per minute, while charges for calls to other networks have fallen by 40% to KES15. Post-paid call costs have also been reduced from KES10 to KES7 and KES6 per minute depending on monthly usage. The company’s chief executive officer, Michael Joseph, said the launch of Jibambie coincided with the company registering its twelve millionth customer.
