Russia’s Alfa Group has said that it has no plans to offload its stake in the country’s second largest cellular operator by subscribers, Vimpelcom. ‘We view Vimpelcom as one of our key strategic assets,’ says Kirill Babaev, senior vice president of Altimo, which runs Alfa Group’s telecoms assets. ‘We stand by our belief in the serious strategic potential of Vimpelcom and are not planning to sell any share that we hold in this company,’ Reuters reports him as saying. Alfa has been locked in a dispute with fellow Vimpelcom shareholder Telenor of Norway over the cellco’s operations in Ukraine. Telenor said last week that it too is keen to hold onto its interest in Vimpelcom.
