Government to establish universal service fund for ICT

7 Oct 2008

The government of Mauritius is setting up a Universal Service Fund (USF) with a view to improving access to ICT services, particularly for people living in poorer parts of the country. The fund is being created under the remit of the ICT Act of 2001, the contents of which have now been finalised. The USF is expected to come into operation within the next few weeks and all telecoms operators holding local or international voice call licences will be expected to contribute to it. The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA), which will manage the fund, expects the USF to raise about USD2.5 million per annum, money which will be used to increase ICT access, reduce internet access costs and boost the speed of broadband services in rural areas.
