6 Oct 2008

The Financial Times is reporting that as part of the joint venture between UK mobile operators T-Mobile and 3, known as Mobile Broadband Network, the cellcos have signed a deal with BT Wholesale which will see the latter provide high speed links between T-Mobile and 3’s base stations; the five-year contract is understood to be worth several hundred million pounds although no financial details have been formally announced. BT Wholesale signed similar agreements with rival operators Vodafone and O2 in April 2008 and May 2008 respectively. Emin Gurdenli, technology director at T-Mobile UK, said, ‘This agreement with BT will make sure backhaul is not a constraint now or in the future at a time when T-Mobile is experiencing strong growth in mobile broadband and other mobile data services.’
