Pelephone denies fixed line plans

6 Oct 2008

According to Globes Online, Israeli cellco Pelephone will not follow rivals Cellcom and Partner Communications into the wireline telephony or internet service provider (ISP) markets; the Bezeq subsidiary will instead continue to focus on the rollout of its next generation wireless infrastructure. Recent rumours had suggested that the operator was considering entry into the inland telephony market after Partner announced its intention to become a full telecoms service provider and Cellcom announced plans for a video-on-demand service with Blockbuster Digital, but these have been denied by Pelephone. Any entry to these markets may have seen the cellco competing with parent company Bezeq, with the report suggesting that the company’s ISP and international calls carrier subsidiary, Bezeq International, may instead enter the inland telephony market.
