Gambia’s ICT bill under review

1 Oct 2008

Gambia’s Department of State for Communications, Information and Information Technology (DOSCIIT) this week entered into discussions with the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) and other participants in the telecoms industry to review the latest draft of the Information and Communications Bill, which aims to liberalise the sector. AllAfrica.com quotes Fatim Badjie-Janneh, the secretary of state for Communication, who described the ‘validation workshop’ as ‘a giant step in the development of the ICT sector in Gambia,’ paving the way for ‘convergence between telecoms, broadcasting, internet [and other services].’ After the review, the bill will be scrutinised by the Cabinet, and the National Assembly is expected to vote on it in the next two months.
