1 Oct 2008

In the first 21 days since number portability (NP) was introduced in Brazil, no fewer than 21,676 subscribers have requested that their number be ported to a new service provider, according to BNamericas citing data from the telecoms standards coordinator ABR Telecom. Of the total requests made by 26 September, 12,993 were from mobile users and 8,683 from fixed telephony customers. Of that number, 5,310 mobile numbers and 3,343 numbers have actually been ported, it said. NP is currently available to approximately 17 million people living in some cities in the states of Espirito Santo, Goias, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Parana, Piaui, and Sao Paulo.
