DIPP raises objection to proposals for 3G bids by foreign players without local partners

The department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) has reportedly objected to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) proposal to allow foreign players to bid for 3G spectrum without an Indian partner, Telecom Tiger is reporting. The announcement comes following telecom secretary Siddarth Behura’s recent comments indicating that foreign telcos should be allowed to participate in the upcoming 3G auctions on their own and be given time to find local partners in order to get necessary clearance from the foreign investment promotion board (FIPB). The DIPP contends that similar flexibility is not offered in other sectors and therefore should not be made available to telcos.
