The internet portal Yahoo! has teamed with Italian cellular operator 3 Italia to offer a USB dongle for mobile broadband services. The USB device, dubbed the Yahoo! Internet Key, will offer mobile internet connectivity over 3’s nationwide UMTS/HSDPA network, with customers directed to a co-branded Yahoo!/3 Italia web portal on connection. The dongle is being offered for free with new monthly contracts ordered via Yahoo! and is also available to buy at 3 stores across Italy.
Separately, the Philippines-based firm PLDT is looking to set up as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) after signing wholesale agreements with 3 Italia’s owner Hutchison Whampoa. PLDT plans to launch in Rome and Milan in early October, offering services under the name Smart Pinoy. The service will be aimed at the Filipino community in Italy, with cut-price international rates between Italy and the Philippines.
