Nextel network attracts interest

29 Sep 2008

The iDEN mobile phone network operated by Sprint Nextel has attracted interest from two private equity groups, the Financial Times reports. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has confirmed that the firm has ‘tested’ buyer interest in the network but it has not yet launched a formal sale process. CDMA operator Sprint inherited the iDEN network when it merged with Nextel three years ago, but the iDEN system has seen customer numbers decline recently in the face of improved mobile data offerings from rival cellular providers such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless.
