23 Sep 2008

A new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) has entered the UK market using Orange’s network; Lycamobile officially launched services on 22 September, although SIMs have been available since 3 September. The MVNO has set aside GBP10 million (USD18.4 million) for a multimedia marketing campaign and will target the ethnic markets in the UK, with the operator announcing plans to claim one million subscribers by the end of its first year of operations. Lycamobile chief executive Milind Kangle said, ‘We will be the new benchmark for MVNO success globally. I believe we are Europe’s largest ethnic targeted MVNO. In the next three years we hope to be the biggest globally, with seven to ten million subscribers.’ The MVNO agreement is Orange UK’s third this year, following deals signed with Blyk Mobile and GlobalCell.
