Bonn bon: 4G car test a success

22 Sep 2008

Reuters reports that German mobile operator T-Mobile and Nortel Networks have successfully tested Long-Term Evolution (LTE) wireless technology in moving cars over a trial network of three cell sites in Bonn. The so-called 4G high speed technology was consistently demonstrated to maintain data connections while driving at an average of 67kph, achieving data rates of up to 170Mbps (download) and 50Mbps (upload), around three times faster than VDSL fixed broadband technology, according to T-Mobile. The report quotes the head of T-Mobile Germany, Philipp Humm, as saying that if LTE proved reliable in further tests in ‘everyday’ situations, his company would consider upgrading its network with it, adding that a decision could be made within six months.
