CAT signs USD59 million fibre-optic contract

18 Sep 2008

CAT Telecom has signed a contract worth THB2 billion (USD59 million) with technology provider Marubeni (Thailand) to build a 9,000km fibre-optic backbone network linking all regions of the country, reports the Bangkok Post. The deal was signed despite the Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) questioning its transparency. CAT’s president Phisal Jorpocha-udom said the OAG had questioned several issues relating to the project but CAT had already clarified all of the queries. He said the OAG told CAT that it would not mind if the state telecom enterprise went ahead with the signing of the deal but reserved the right to inspect the technical details later. The report quotes the chairman of CAT’s board, Sathit Limpongpan, as saying that he was not informed in advance of the signing of the contract, adding that he would have preferred it to have been delayed until ‘a more appropriate time.’
