BSNL plans IPTV rollout for 98 cities by November

State-owned operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is planning to expand its IPTV offerings to 98 cities by the end of November, according to LiveMint.com. The telco plans to appoint franchisees to roll out the service, and has already agreed deals with five companies; Aksh Optifibre, Smart Digivision Pvt, IOL Broadband, Times Broadband and Maharashtra Knowledge Company (MKCL). Anil Jain, Deputy Director General (Broadband) for BSNL also announced that the operator was targeting 150,000 subscribers by March 2009. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, BSNL will face competition in the IPTV market from operators including HFCL Infotel and Reliance Communications (RCOM), both of which are planning commercial launches before the end of 2008.
