Macedonian mobile operator Cosmofon, a unit of Cosmote of Greece which earlier this week appointed N M Rothschild & Sons and EFG Telesis Finance as sale advisors for its possible sale, yesterday announced the launch of its 3G network. The Macedonian telecoms regulator, the Agency for Electronic Communications (AEC), awarded a 3G licence to Cosmofon following a tender in November 2007. According to local news agency Makfax, the company claims to have met the terms of its licence concerning minimum coverage targets ahead of the February 2009 deadline. Cosmofon’s 3G services will initially be available to 50% of the population, mainly in large cities such as Skopje, Bitola, Ohrid, Gostivar, Tetovo and Kavadarci.
