Interconnection rates to be cut in two phases

In a joint press conference yesterday the Department of State for Communication, Information and Technology (DOSCIT) the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) revealed plans for a significant reduction in interconnection rates between GSM operators and fixed network companies, reports AllAfrica.com. According to officials, under the first phase of cuts to take effect on 8 October, interconnection rates among all of the country’s operators will drop to GMD1 (USD0.05), down from GMD2.5 and GMD2 currently. The second phase of reductions will be introduced by 8 April 2009, and which will bring the rate down to GMD0.5. However, interconnection rates for international calls are to remain unchanged, with officials saying that the international gateway is not sufficiently competitive yet.
