Antel to maintain monopoly status

15 Sep 2008

The president of Antel, Edgardo Carvalho, has been quoted in the local press as saying that the state-owned telco will retain its monopoly on fixed line telephony, reports BNamericas. The executive was responding to comments made by Jaime Igorra – head of the country’s telecoms regulator, Ursec – who said that a work group comprising representatives from several state agencies had been created to study the possibility of liberalising the wireline market. Carvalho stated that Antel has not joined any work group, adding that only the Congress could issue a law to end the monopoly.
