Econet Wireless Kenya is set to begin testing its network later this month ahead of a commercial launch which is due by November. The operator is working with Swedish equipment manufacturer Ericsson on its network rollout and the vendor’s managing director, Thomas Sonesson, says: ‘The Ericsson team has been working round the clock to ensure the delivery and installation of a functional network service within the shortest possible time.’ Econet will enter the market to compete alongside the two well-established cellular players, Safaricom and Celtel, with wireline operator Telkom Kenya also set to launch a mobile network soon. Econet Wireless Kenya’s managing director, Michael Foley, told local newspaper The Nation: ‘There are a lot of challenges in building a business from the bottom up. Our plan is to give our customers a unique offering and offer better service than our competitors.’
