National Broadband Network tender deadline announcement due today

3 Sep 2008

The Australian government is expected to announce a deadline of 26 November for tenders for the National Broadband Network (NBN) today, The Australian is reporting. The project, which is expected to receive AUD4.7 billion (USD3.95 billion) in public funding, has been delayed following slow response for network information from incumbent Telstra; potential bidders required this data in order to formulate bids for the project. There are now likely to be only two national bids for the project, with Telstra expected to face competition from Terria, a consortium including Optus and AAPT. Although initial targets were for construction of the network to begin by the end of 2008, the current timetable would see work start no earlier than mid-2009.
